Overview

Medical Assistant Certificate
 
Certified Medical Assistants (CMA’s) are an essential part of the healthcare team and work primarily in medical offices performing routine administrative and clinical duties, such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, collecting patient histories and vital signs, and assisting healthcare providers with examinations and treatments. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible for the Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam.
 
Program Overview
 
This program is taught as a cohort with an application process. Students are placed at a local healthcare agency to complete their clinical practicum. Coursework includes instruction of methods commonly used in a healthcare setting related to patient preparation, obtaining vital signs, documentation, medication administration, immunizations, diagnostic testing, electronic medical record, phlebotomy, obtaining an EKG, drug calculations, sterile techniques, and obtaining patient histories.
 
Students who successfully complete this certificate will be able to:
  1. Individuals will meet eligibility requirements for the national certification exam.
  2. Demonstrate professional and technical skills necessary to perform administrative and clinical duties.
  3. Communicate effectively in a therapeutic, respectful, and professional manner with patients, providers, and all members of the healthcare team.
All healthcare programs at TBCC require a current Healthcare Providers CPR card (and/or HE 110) and for the student to provide verification of certain immunizations and pass a criminal background investigation and drug screen prior to participation in field or clinical rotations. Clinical placements require students to be at least 18 years of age.
