This program is designed to instruct students at the level of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). EMT’s are a vital member of the healthcare team, assessing and caring for sick or injured patients in the prehospital and hospital environment. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the National Registry EMT Certification exam and apply for an Oregon State EMT license. The Emergency Medical Services Certificate provides the ability to apply for positions as an EMT in hospital emergency departments, ambulance services, and urgent care clinics. It is also the minimum requirement for some firefighter positions.
 
Program Overview
 
The Emergency Medical Services Certificate prepares students to build problem solving, patient care, and team building skills. Licensed EMT’s, under the supervision of a physician, prepare and transport ill or injured patients, and operate emergency vehicles and equipment. Coursework includes instruction in first aid and emergency medicine field techniques, patient stabilization and care, medical field communications, equipment operation and maintenance, emergency vehicle operation, and applicable standards and regulations.
 
Students who successfully complete this certificate will be able to:
  1. Act in accordance with the ethical and professional medical standards of the entry level EMT Basic.
  2. Demonstrate the professional and technical skill set necessary in emergency situations in an EMT Basic capacity.
  3. Demonstrate effective communication, cultural competency, and emergency intervention skills for people in crisis.
  4. Individuals completing the certificate will meet the eligibility requirements to take and pass the State of Oregon and National certification examination for EMT Basic.

All healthcare programs at TBCC require a current Healthcare Providers CPR card (and/or HE 110) and for the student to provide verification of certain immunizations and pass a criminal background investigation and drug screen prior to participation in field or clinical rotations. Clinical placements require students to be at least 18 years of age.
