ENG 299 The “Universal” Monster: Classic Horror in Literature and Early Cinema

This course will examine monstrous beings like Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, the Mummy, and the Phantom of the Opera in their various incarnations in their folk, literary, and film adaptations. During the term, students will also explore the cultural impact and significance of these creatures in popular culture. Students will learn that monsters are more than just scary stories, rather, they tell us about ourselves and our own cultural values.
