WR 254 Imaginitive Writing III (Poetry)

This course is designed to introduce students to the genre of poetry. They will learn the conventions and techniques of the genre through guided creative writing projects. Reading professional poets, students will write poems that show an understanding of what choices are available to writers while exploring the fundamentals of craft such as meter, rhyme, conceit, and metaphor. Prerequisite: WR 121.

Fulfills General Education requirements for Arts & Letters

Addendum: One focus of this course is learning how to read from a writer’s perspective—reading to understand how a writer has structured a poem, how one has created tension or evoked emotion, how they make characters come alive and uses the music of language to evoke a sensory experience.
