SOIL 205 Soil Science

Introduction to the chemical, physical and biological nature of soils. Examines the functions of soil as a medium of plant growth, a recycling system for nutrients and wastes, a modifier of atmospheric chemistry, a habitat for soil organisms, a system for water purification, and an engineering medium. Field and laboratory projects provide an understanding of fundamental soil science principles and the impact of human activities on soil quality and sustainability. Field trips required. Fulfills General Education requirements for Math, Science, Computer Science (with Lab) Addendum: This course is intended to articulate to Oregon State University (OSU) as SOIL 205, which is part of the OSU Baccalaureate Core curriculum, under both the categories Biological Science Perspectives and Physical Science Perspectives. In this course students will learn about the chemical, physical, and biological nature of soils. Students will learn about the factors controlling soil development, what a soil name can tell a person about the environment, and how land management decisions affect soil quality and its sustainability. Topics will include: the importance of soils, what soil is, how soil forms, how soils are described, physical properties of soils, soil water, soil chemistry, soil biology, and soil sustainability.
